Abstract EN

The study included 800 patients (455 males and 345 females) admitted to Aleppo University Hospital with clinical signs or complaint directed towards infection doubt with hepatitis C virus (HCV), during the period between 27/06/2010 and 15/11/2010.

This study aimed to assess the sensitivity of each of the immuno-chromatographic test ICT and the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), used in the detection of infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV).

The ratio of the effective spread of infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) was 6.875 % of total patients of the study.

The percentage of the false-negative and the false-positive results in the ICT was 5.25 % and 0.625 % respectively.

These results indicate that the screening ICTs for anti-HCV do not predict a true picture of the prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV).

This underlines the need to use the ELISA and the RT-PCR in order to confirm the diagnosis of infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV) in public hospitals, health care units and blood transfusion centers.
