In modern research field, the world ‘impressed’ has become a catch expression which indicates the researchers’ admiration of a certain idea or saying in any area of a given research.

This study will discuss the contradictory meanings of the word ‘impressed’ in Ibn Qutaybah’s discussion of certain interpretation of Quran.

It was found out that many of these expressions were used to express a since of admiration or agreement of what is being said or discussed by those interpetors, mainly when it its demonstrated by a prophetic Hadith or a common Arab saying.

However, it was also found out that the same word was used by Ibn Qutaybah to mean the opposite of the aforesaid meaning.

The word was used to express a cynical attitude when an idea or a saying is awkwardly supported by a hackneyed expression or even by a the poetic rhyme.

Ibn Qutaybah, then used the expression ‘impresed” to mean his disagreement with those interpreters of Quran who never substantiated their interpretations with valid Quranic facts, or prophetic sayings.
