Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a complex, progressive disease, which is accompanied by multiple cardiovascular complications.

Cardiovascular complications accompany with type II diabetes mellitus are the most important causes of mortality and morbidity.

Many different factors have attributed to diabetic vasculopathy.

Recently, the role of platelets in diabetic vasculopathy has been shown.

Altered platelet morphology and function have been reported in patients with diabetes mellitus.

Increased mean platelet volume (MPV), indicating higher platelet reactivity, is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

The objective of this study was to compare the platelets count and MPV in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), and non-diabetic controls.

The results showed that there was no significant difference between the platelet counts of the two groups, but significant differences were observed in MPV.

Mean MPV was significantly increased in the diabetic subjects (mean±SEM: 8.9±0.7 fL,) compared with nondiabetic subjects (8.0±0.5 fL) (p<0.005).

Also, the values of MPV in type 2 diabetics with poor glycemic control were higher than that values observed in diabetics with good glycemic control (9.0±0.5 vs 8.5±0.9) (P<0.05).

Since platelet size is a determinant of platelet function, with larger platelets being more reactive, we suggest that platelets may play an important role in the micro- and macrovascular complications of diabetic patients.

Our results suggested also a close relationship between poor glycemic control and increased platelet activity in patients with type 2 DM.
