English Abstract

Sample and hold circuits are considered the heart of analog to digital converters (ADCs) which are used in many digital signal processing systems.

Designing a high sampling rate ADC enables data transfer for high bandwidth systems.

Moreover, achieving low power, high speed and small area is a significant challenge.

Analog signal sampling and storing its value is the main function of the sample and hold circuit.

So, it is the basic component in ADCs.

This work presents a novel design of a sample and hold circuit which can work at 25GS/s.

It is designed using 28nm CMOS technology.

This design consists of three main stages.

The input buffer which is responsible for increasing the input impedance of the circuit and boosting the signal at a higher frequency.

The switch stage which is the core of the sample and hold circuit.

It is responsible for sampling the input signal.

Finally, the output buffer which is used to boost the signal that comes from the switch stage and drive the next stage which is most likely a comparator.

The proposed circuit is designed using Synopsys Cdesigner software which is a leading program in microelectronics and VLSI design.

The circuit uses a 1V supply voltage commonly used for the digital circuits.

It is simulated using HSPICE tool utilizing a 3GHz input signal with a differential peal to peak voltage amplitude of 0.4V and 25GHz clock signal.

The proposed circuit consumed total power of 2.47mW and area of 0.005mm2.

Moreover, the circuit has achieved -40dB Total Harmonic Distortion, THD.
