English Abstract
Enterprise information systems are being widely and extensively used in many business domains.
In fact, some of these domains cannot survive in operations without depending heavily on such systems, as observed in banking, telecommunication, and government.
Although several research studies and investigations have been performed that explore the importance of enterprise information systems, only a few studies have been focusing on an effective and efficient end-to-end approach to design and develop such systems.
In this thesis, a proposed software development framework (Smart-EIS) design and implementation is presented.
The main objective of Smart-EIS is to make the development of high-quality enterprise information systems more effective and efficient.
In particular, the proposed work aims at reducing the development cost and providing built-in transparent quality, security, performance and user-experience features.
A comprehensive review of the traditional enterprise information systems is presented in the thesis.
The review includes a discussion of the various characteristics and patterns of such systems, the tiers architectural patterns, and the main components of these systems.
To provide an end-to-end approach, a summary of the required software infrastructure for the development of high-quality software applications for different scalability levels is also provided.
The working methodology in this thesis depends on making all the common and general aspects of enterprise information systems dynamic.
It starts with extracting metadata models from the traditional architectural and components patterns.
Based on these metadata, APIs have been designed and implemented, which could be utilized and reused as separate libraries.
These libraries were then composed to make the full and complete proposed framework.
In terms of validating and evaluating the work presented in this thesis, the proposed framework including its APIs have been (i) implemented as open-source projects, (ii) used to build a simple human resource management system, and (iii) utilized to build a student information system in order to evaluate the framework’s impact on the required development efforts of building such systems.
Moreover, results of validation and evaluation have been presented and discussed in this thesis, which show a promising potential in achieving the objectives of the proposed framework.
In addition, state-of-the-art standards, tools, and technologies have been used throughout this thesis, including entity relationship model diagramming for the metadata model, various UML diagrams (e.g.
class and sequence diagrams) for the design and architecture of the framework and APIs, Java technology for the implementation, Eclipse as the integrated development environment, MySQL as the database management system, GIT as a version control tool, Git-hub as open-source repository, and Maven central as the release repository.
