English Abstract

This work presents a control methodology of a solar cell powered induction motor for maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and maximum efficiency (ME).

MPPT is achieved by using Cuk converter as a hardware and Hill Climbing (HC) as a software.

Maximum efficiency (ME) is achieved by using a three phase inverter as a hardware and field oriented control (FOC), Voltage over frequency (V/f) control as a software.

If the system works at MPPT and ME then, the system is said to work optimally.

The new system combines a PI/PID controller, FOC, V/f control and HC to achieve optimal operation.

The designed system is optimized using Genetic Algorithm (GA) to find the optimum parameters for the PI/PID controller.

These parameters were calculated for different levels of irradiations and different levels of fluctuations.

It was found that different value of PI/PID controller gain need to be used for different levels of irradiations.

Finally, simulation results show that this control methodology improved the overall performance with efficiencies ranging from 0.45 to 0.57.

Without using PI/PID controller, the efficiency ranges from 0.33 to 0.339.

Thus, the proposed control results in about 40% efficiency improvement over classical FOC.
