English Abstract

This study aims to investigate the degree of congruence between the communication content in “Cutting Edge” textbook and the American Criteria for Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

The study is based on the descriptive analytical approach of evaluating and analyzing the content of TEFL textbooks.

Therefore, the study was applied on the pre-intermediate level of “Cutting Edge” textbook.

Modules (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14) were chosen and analyzed in terms of the communication content as a sample of the study.

In order to achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher tried to answer the following questions: 1.What is the communication content in “Cutting Edge” textbook? 2.What is the degree of congruence between the communication content in “Cutting Edge” textbook and the American Criteria for Teaching Foreign Languages? A checklist designed by the researcher is used as an instrument of the study.

This checklist consisted of (38) statements that have been chosen according to (ACTFL) communication standards; (23) statements belonged to standard (1), (7) belonged to standard (2), and (8) belonged to standard (3).

Moreover, reliability and validity of the study have been assured.

The findings of the study revealed that the communication content in “Cutting Edge” textbook consists of the three communication standards of (ACTFL).

In addition, the results showed that there is a congruence between the communication content in “Cutting Edge” textbook and the American Criteria for Teaching Foreign Languages with a percentage of (72%), which seems to be insufficient.

In light of the results of the study, the researcher recommended the following: 1.

Researchers should conduct more studies on analyzing the communication content of TEFL textbooks.

2.

Authors of TEFL textbooks should pay more attention to developing and upgrading the communication part in TEFL textbooks.

3.Universities and schools should provide suitable facilities and activities for teachers and students of TEFL curriculum to enhance the communication content in the textbooks.

4.

Standards of ACTFL should be followed by The Ministry of Education and The Ministry of Higher Education to design TEFL textbooks.
