Abstract EN

The effect of gamma radiation on optical properties of dyed (poly vinyl butyral \alizarin \brilliantgreen) films in the presence of chloral hydrate for possible use in dosimetry have been studied using UV – visible spectrophotometer.

The current work describes the investigation of poly (vinyl butyral) films incorporating a mixture of brilliant green (BG), Alizarin (AZ) and chloral hydrate .

The effect of chloral hydrate concentration , dye concentration , temperature and humidity during irradiation as well as pre- and post- irradiation stability on the film response are described.

The films were irradiated to doses up to 100 kGy using 60 Co of gamma ray source at a constant dose rate.

The absorbance spectra were measured in the wavelength range 190 – 900 nm, showing a decrease of the absorbance at 633 nm band peak with increasing dose.

Such behavior indicated that these films are useful radiation dosimeters in the dose range (5-50 kGy) depending on the concentration of dye and chloral hydrate.

Although the response of these films is affected by temperature (at 450C), they have good stability before and after irradiation in different conditions (dark, light, ambient temperature and humidity).

The main advantage of these films is the possibility of using them as a radiation monitor through color changing profile (used as a label).
