English Abstract

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are aircrafts that fly without a human pilot onboard.

UAVs have gained much interest in the research community as they play significant roles in various fields such as surveillance, search and rescue, armed attacks, and mineral exploration.

A major issue in developing appropriate controllers for UAV applications is formulating an appropriate and accurate UAV model as these aircrafts exhibit highly nonlinear behavior.

In this Thesis, experimental flight data (with four inputs and twelve state outputs) are used to identify and build a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) mathematical model of a Bixler 3 (Bix3) UAV.

Bix3 is a popular commercial fixed-wing aircraft with flight data available and shared on the web.

Flight data (for takeoff, flying, and landing) were gathered, divided into different sets, processed and used in the identification methodology.

The identification model was based on a nonlinear autoregressive exogenous model (NARX) within a feed forward neural network (FFNN) structure.

Different simulation runs (from different Bix3 flights) were used to validate the identified model.

Results show that the developed Bix3 model is very accurate as the outputs of the identified model were able to follow the original flight data with minimal error
