Abstract EN

This study aimed to compare the external surface roughness of superelastic nickel-titanium wires used in orthodontics before and after clinical use.

Sample consisted of 12 NiTi Force I Superelastic nickel-titanium orthodontic wires (0.019 in×0.025 in) produced from American Orthodontics®.

Wires were examined using Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) to measure its surface roughness (Sa).

Then, wires were applied in the lower arch of 12 patients for 30 days then examined using AFM.

Significant differences were registered between new and used wires.

Surfaces of used nickel-titanium orthodontic wires were more roughness and complicated than new ones.
