English Abstract

Optical fiber communication system uses an optical fiber cable, as a medium in which the information is transmitted from one place to another, in the form of light guided through fiber cables.

Optical fiber introduces a huge bandwidth because traditional copper wires transmit electrical currents, while fibre optic technology sends pulses of light generated by a light emitting diode or laser along optical fibers. Pulse dispersion happens due to linear effects which is called group velocity dispersion (GVD), leads the communication systems to be imperfect, which causes most pulses to broaden in time as they propagate through the optical fiber.

A self-phase modulation (SPM) is a nonlinear effect which is dependent on the refractive index variation due to light intensity. This thesis shows how perfect balancing between GVD and SPM leads to optical solitons, which are very short pulses that can propagate without distortion over long distances and maintain their shape, considering this as a remarkable evolution in an optical communication systems.

The soliton propagation is introduced using Nonlinear Schrodinger Equation (NLSE). Results show how linear and nonlinear effects can change the pulse shape.

The propagation of optical soliton is investigated as well, at different wavelengths using Sellmeier equation.

It is also shown that the optimum case for soliton propagation can be achieved by matching the soliton criteria, such as the soliton peak power, the soliton order and the attenuation coefficient
