Is it allowed to take out mandatory travel insurance in order to be able to volunteer in a charity abroad ?

I have signed up to volunteer for a charity working abroad but have found out that I will be required to take out Travel Insurance. Is it permissible for me to get travel insurance cover or should I opt for volunteering somewhere else where this will not be a requirement ?
