English Abstract

Antimicrobial and antioxidant activities of ethyl acetate extract from aerial parts of Rosmarinus officinalis were investigated.

The crude extract was partially purified using liquid column chromatography technique.

The bioactivity of crude extract and partially purified fractions was tested by using agar diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) assays as well as antioxidant assay using DPPH method.

Extract of R.

officinalis revealed antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacteria, namely, Bacillus subtilis, Micrococcus luteus and Staphylococcus aureus.

The crude extract caused an inhibition zone of 14.0 mm to B.

subtilis at 200μg/ml with MIC of (3 – 400 μg/ml) for all tested Gram positive bacteria.

The antioxidant activity of tested extract and partially purified fractions ranged from IC50 (26.124 -109.649 μg/ml).

They exhibited antioxidant activity with TEAC of (0.78 – 3.19) μg Trolox/ μg plant extract.

officinalis represents a good candidate for isolation of antimicrobial compounds and antioxidant agents with pharmaceutical significance.
