English Abstract

Up to the present time the parabolic trough power plant systems are considered to be the most efficient concentrated solar power systems that form the basic central and prime mover of the globally electricity production wheel in renewable energy , as they contribute to the bulk production of the world’s electricity production ; compared to the other concentrated solar power systems , therefore increased attention of all the standards and factors that would improve performance of these systems and decrease thermal and optical losses , in addition to reducing the installation of these projects and reduce the electricity production cost .

Jordan shares the installation of such projects on its territory , for example one of these projects is parabolic trough power project collector on the roof of engineering college at Mu’tah university , this project produces approximately 15 kWe and 120 kWth and this project was designed on a special non burning oil boiler to generate steam generation at 220 °C , therefore in this study the performance of molten salts were studied , analyzed and evaluated as an alternative efficient heat transfer medium .

In this study will be calculated the basic parameters that assess the parabolic trough collectors performance [ losses , efficiency and cost ] .

The results of the comparative study on analysis of the molten salts as a solar thermal storage medium with other heat transfer fluid types such as mineral oil , synthetic oil and to generate steam in particular ; has shown that the molten salt is an excellent heat storage medium as well as being environmental friendly .

The Rankine cycle efficiency increase by about 15.6% , the system performance improve by about 62.3% , and consequently the electricity cost production decreases by about 89.9% .
