English Abstract

Within solar energy technologies, the hybrid photovoltaic–thermal PVT systems offer an attractive option because the absorbed solar radiation is converted into thermal and electrical energy.

In this thesis, an attempt is made to investigate the thermal and electrical performance of a solar photovoltaic thermal collector.

A detailed thermal model is developed to calculate the thermal parameters of a typical PVT collector.

The thermal parameters of this collector include solar cell temperature, outlet water temperature, thermal efficiency and useful thermal energy.

An analytical expression for an overall efficiency (electrical and thermal) has been derived by using energy balance equation for each component.

A PV system has been designed with a capacity of 3.7 kWp.

The same PV panels were used to design a PVT collector, a film of water passes through the back of PV panel to increase the electrical efficiency, and to utilize heat produced.

Electrical efficiency of PV module was improved by 10.37% in summer conditions.

Further, it is concluded that total efficiency of PVT collector is significantly increased due to utilization of thermal energy in PV module to be about 66.57% in sometimes of the year.
