Syria is located on the northern boundary of the Arabian plate.
Through the western part of this plate runs the Syrian Great Rift (Dead Sea Transform Fault) and its different branches in areas adjacent to Syria like Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea.
To the north of this plate passes the East Anatolia Fault and to the northeast the Zagarouse - Torous Great Fault.
This tectonic setting made most of the Syrian territory vulnerable to earthquakes throughout its history.
The aim of this research is to evaluate the seismic situation in Syria by using the Cartographic Method of Analysis and the Geographic Information Systems.
It is based on the study and analysis of a number of spatial data.
The most important of which are the historical and modern (instrumental) seismic records.
Through this study a number of conclusions have been reached.
The most important of these are the following: 1- We specified the location of eleven high intensity seismic foci in Syria.
Ten out of these eleven were located in the western part of Syria and an only one in the northeastern part of Syria.
2- We found out that there is a strong correlation between the Great Syrian Rift and the tremors that occurred on the Syrian territory.
3- We also found out that there is a clear connection between the mountainous steep slopes, the valleys and the deep plains surround them on one hand, and the tremors on the other.
4- Most of the Syrian major cities are situated near the hazardous seismic foci.
5- We evaluated the seismic situation in Syria and divided the Syrian territory into four different types of hazardous seismic zones.
