Abstract EN

The Municipality of the Holy City of Makkah has shown interest in the projects of Makkah's development and in the field of civil expansion in particular, an expansion that the Holy City has witnessed in the last few years.

Due to their role in beautifying the environment and their role in improving the climate of the city, the projects of afforestation are given special attention.

And this study aims at assessing Makkah's afforestation projects through studying the geographical distribution of green areas and landscape inside the districts of Makkah and through the definition of the distribution pattern.

The study area includes the districts within the Third Ring Road as they are the center of high population density in Makkah.

To calculate the area of the green areas, the study has employed a SPOT 5 satellite imagery to produce a topographic map of Makkah.

Later, the Geographical Information System software has been used to process the data collected.

The study has found out that the geographical distribution of green areas is interspersed in the districts of Makkah located within the Third Ring Road, and that this distribution rises higher when we move further from the center towards the outskirt of the Third Ring Road, south-east and north-west and north-east of Makkah.

And the study has also found out that the distribution of green areas is concentrated in the borders of the study's area.

The study recommends the redistribution of afforestation projects in the districts around the central area, together with the necessity of developing innovative afforestation projects in the central area of Makkah which witnesses constructional modernization.

The study also recommends the utilization of mountains' feet surrounding the central area and to incorporate them into the afforestation projects.
