English Abstract

Ten bacterial strains, which previously have had enriched and isolated in the presence of a mixture of polyaromatic hydrocarbons, were tested for their capability of utilizing N-containing petrochemical compounds.

The obtained result revealed the metabolic capability of the tested bacterial strains to grow and utilize the offered nitrogenous compounds (aniline, Quinoline, anthranilic acid and carbazole) as sole sources for both carbon and nitrogen.

Accordingly, it was concluded that the degradative metabolic pathway rather than the denitrogenation pathway operates in the metabolism of these compounds by the tested bacterial strains. The bacterial utilization and growth with anthranilic acid were faster and higher than that with other N-containing compounds.

The metabolism of CAR by selected three bacterial strains (4A, 13A and 15B) probably follows the reported pathway which involves the formation of anthranilic acid as the a possible intermediate.

Attempts to detect the genes coding for CAR degradation in strains 4A, 13A and 15B using degenerate primers were unsuccessful.
