English Abstract

Wastewater treatment is a significant issue in environment protection, that includes many topics such as heavy and trace element removal, such as Boron to fulfill the standards for reuse.

Recently, Zeolite is used to remove boron from drinking water and industrial wastewater.

This research investigated the characteristics of boron removal from domestic wastewater by locally produced Zeolite from wood fly ash.

Two experiments were carried out: zeolite synthesis from wood fly ash and batch mode adsorption process for wastewater.

The batch experiment investigated the basic characteristics of produced zeolite as well as its removal capacity of boron from municipal wastewater.

Thus, four main factors were investigated in aqueous solution and wastewater: initial boron concentration, initial pH, contact time and zeolite dosage.

pH and contact time showed significant variation on the removal of boron.

Freundlich and Langmuir Isotherms, are describing the relationship between the amount of boron adsorbed and its equilibrium concentration in wastewater.

The best adsorption isotherm fitting was found when Langmuir isotherm describe the efficiency of zeolite dosage effect with saturation capacity 3.874*10-3 mg of boron/g of zeolite (R2 =0.9551).

The best value of removal accounted for aqueous solutions at 870 mg/L of boron concentration and at 1 hour was obtained 45%.

Initial boron concentration had significant effect.

In addition to aqueous solution experiment, a municipal wastewater effluent was treated by zeolite.

The best efficiency was achieved at 4 hrs.

(contact time), 1 mg/L (initial boron concentration), pH 6.5 and zeolite dosage 0.38g/100 ml of sample 55%.
