English Abstract

In the compression problem, the task is to reduce the size of the data as minimum as possible without effects on these data when reconstructing the original data.

This is achieved depending on different techniques, some of these techniques based on Wavelet Transform (WT). In this research, the two methods for video compression, intra and inter coded frames are utilized.

Intra coded frame based on removing the spatial redundancy that found in the same frame, and inter coded frames based on removing the temporal redundancy that found between successive frames by using motion estimation algorithms.

In this method (inter coded frames) two compression approaches have been proposed, The first approach is constructed from seven algorithms of motion estimation algorithms (forward motion estimation); Namely, Exhaustive Search Algorithm (ES), Three Step Search (TSS), New Three Step Search (NTSS), Four Step Search (4SS), Diamond Search (DS), Adaptive Rood Pattern Search (ARPS) and Simple and Efficient Search (SES). The second approach is constructed from wavelet transform of frames followed by seven algorithms of motion estimation algorithms mentioned before. For the sake of evaluation, peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) measure and compression ratio (CR) were utilized to compare between reconstructed frame and original frame.

Several tests on two video clips were done.

Each clip is composed of 15 grayscale frames, in addition to, 15 color frames in size of 256x256.

The experimental results show that the second approach (with DWT) achieves higher PSNR and faster execution speed of compression /decompression.
