Abstract EN
Background & Objective: Many methods are used to treat Periodontitis such as scaling and root planing (SRP) with hand instruments, Sonic and Ultrasonic instruments.
Recently, lasers are used in periodontal.
The aim of the study is to compare the Efficiency of Er:YAG Laser Combined with Scaling and Root Planing in Chronic Periodontitis Treatment.
Material & Method: Twenty four patients with chronic Periodontitis were non surgery treated in a splitmouth design with an Er:YAG laser (test) or with SRP (test) alone.
The used energy setting for laser treatment was 120 mJ/pulse at a repetition rate of 10 Hz.
Prior to treatment and one and three months later the following parameters were evaluated: Plaque index (PI), Bleeding on probing (BOP), Probing depth (PD) and clinical attachment level (CAL).
Pain Index was taken exactly after the treatment.
No statistical significant differences in any of the investigated parameters between both groups were observed at baseline.
Results: Initially, the plaque index was 1.42 in the test group and 1.47 in the control group.
At the firstmonth examination the plaque scores were markedly reduced and remained low throughout the study.
A significant reduction of the BOP occurred in both groups after 1 and 3 months (P<0.05).
The mean PD decreased in the test group from 3.26 mm at Baseline to 2.48 mm after 3 months (P<0.05) and in the control group from 3.27 mm at baseline to 2.49 mm after 3 months (P<0.05).
The mean CAL decreased in the test group from 2.85 mm at Baseline to 2.42 mm after 3 months (P<0.05) and in the control group from 2.97 mm at baseline to 2.39 mm after 3 months (P<0.05).
Pain index was 2.29 in the test group compared to 6.58 in the control group with a statistical significant difference (P<0.05).
Conclusion: In conclusion, the present results have indicated that non surgical periodontal therapy with an Er:YAG laser has no advantages over SRP.
Both treatments may lead to significant improvements in all clinical parameters investigated.
On the other hand, Er:YAG laser treatment may improve the patient outcomes by reducing the pain.
