English Abstract

This thesis presents case studies regarding analysis of reinforced concrete flat plates.

Two-way flat plate case studies including: columns offset, skewed panel shape, difference in successive span lengths, openings and column cross sectional shape.

The analysis is conducted using the finite element based computer software SAFE version 12.3.1 which is specialized in plate analysis.

Results from the software are then compared with existing results from direct design method and equivalent frame method and are found to be consistent.

The study indicates that the increase in column offset in short and long directions simultaneously from 0% to 30% of the span causes moment reduction down to 84% and increase up to 167%, punching shear stress ratio decreases down to 63% and increases up to 153% and an increase in deflection up to 455%.

Skewing panels along the long direction by an angle from 0o to 10o clockwise causes moment reduction down to 28%.

The results also indicate that an increase in middle spans lengths in short and long directions simultaneously from 0m to 2.1m to the right and upward respectively causes moment reduction down to 94% and increase up 150%, punching shear stress ratio decreases down to 96% and increases up to 130% and an increase in deflection up to 275%.

Increasing the opening dimensions in an area common to intersecting column and middle strips causes moment reduction down to 58%.

Increasing the opening dimensions (in the central panel) in an area common to intersecting middle strips causes moment reduction down to 31%.

II The study also indicates that T-shaped columns are an effective type of columns in terms of change in moment (reduction down to 3% and increase up to 30%), and punching shear stress ratio (decrease down to 53% in corner columns thereby, no failure, and increase up to 6%) , as for deflection it doesn’t change by much
