English Abstract
Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) consist of small nodes (motes) with sensing, computation, and wireless communications capabilities.
The sensor nodes are usually battery-operated devices.
Thereby, energy saving of such nodes is a major design issue.
To prolong the network’s lifetime, minimization of energy consumption should be implemented at different layers in the network protocols stack starting from the physical layer to the application layer via cross-layer optimization.
In this thesis, we propose a new routing mechanism to mitigate the energy problem in WSN.
In effect, the communication activity is still more power demanding than computation or sensing in such network.
The protocols of the two layers of data link layer and network layer are efficiently developed to reduce the amount of energy consumed by the transmitted packets from sensor nodes to the Base Station (Sink node).
The protocols make efficient selection and usage of the communication paths (routing path) via a new protocols package named Energy Efficiency Improvement Package (EEIP).
The package is basically comprised of two main protocols; Fuzzy Logic Adaptive Routing Control (FL-ARC) and Energy Saving Adaptive Error control (ES-AEC).
In this package, we design two fuzzy logic controllers at the base station to select one of two fitting routing protocols; one protocol is Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) which can be used for a single-hop routing and the other is Collection Tree Protocol (CTP) for multi-hop routing.
The selection process is done depending on the environment variations; number of nodes and deployed area.
On the other hand, we design a Look-up table at each sensor node which can choose suitable number of error correction bits in order to adapt the packet transmission to network variation through the adaptive error control at sensor nodes.
This adaptive scheme is based on two parameters of data packet size and the distance between neighbouring nodes.
Using Castalia 3.2 simulator, we have conducted several experiments on proposed EEIP package to evaluate the energy efficiency and network life time under different scenarios in wireless sensor environment.
Moreover, the results compare EEIP performance with the existing protocols of LEACH and CTP individually.
The simulation results obviously show that our proposed package can effectively improve the network performance in terms of the packet successful rate, packet drop rate, and saving energy compared to the existing individual protocols like LEACH and CTP.
Thus, our EEIP is an energy efficient and robust routing package using fuzzy logic controllers and adaptive error control for wireless sensor networks especially for continually monitoring applications
