English Abstract

With the evolution of wireless cellular networks like Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS), the usage of the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) has become more popular for a reliable data delivery despite of its initially design for wired networks.

In such networks, data is lost mainly due to congestion.

TCP interprets all data loss a congestion event in the network; thus TCP slows down its transmission rate in order to reduce this congestion.

In counterpart, it is no longer appropriate to assume that most losses are caused by congestion in wireless networks.

Data loss is often caused by the relatively low quality of the wireless link due to the radio signals affected by noise, fading, shadowing and interference.

In this thesis, we propose new adaptive approaches of soft computing systems aiming to improve the TCP performance of mobile cellular networks.

At the base station (BS), a new Fuzzy-Logic Adaptive Queuing controller (FLAQ) based on a classical Random Early Detection (RED) algorithm is proposed.

The controller predicts dynamically the packet dropping rate and the corresponding average queue length.

It relies on the average queue length at the base station router and the packet loss rate caused by the channel variations in mobile environment when there is no buffer overflow due to the congestion.

Using this model, a heuristic TCP performance is estimated over a time-varying channel under different conditions of user’s mobility.

Another new Fuzzy-Logic controller known as Fuzzy Logic-Adaptive Speed Controller (FL-ASC) is also proposed at the mobile host (MH).

This FL-ASC can also dynamically predict the wireless packet error rate and tunes the speed of mobile over Rayleigh fading channel.

Additionally, a combination system of those two controllers; FLAQ and FL-ASC are also introduced to enhance evaluation of the overall TCP performance for the next transmission under different channel conditions.Simulation results are obtained by using Network Simulator NS-2 to verify our proposed systems at both sides of Base Station as well as Mobile Client.

The additional patch for Enhanced UMTS Radio Access Network Extensions (EURANE) is employed.

As a result, the proposed Fuzzy-Logic Adaptive Controllers effectively highlight the best performance in terms of network throughput at different conditions of mobile speed, packet loss rate, and average queue length as well compared to existing TCP Reno communication without fuzzy
