Abstract EN

Background: The prevalence of clinical manifestations and laboratory parameters in systemic lupus erythematosus differ among various ethnic groups.

Studies in Arabs are few and those in Middle East and especially in Syria are rare.

Objective: The aim of this study is to describe the clinical and serological features, of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) syrian patients, from Al Mouassat university hospital and to compare them with other series from different Arab countries.

Patients and methods: This is a cross sectional, descriptive study, included 31 SLE patients who attended Rheumatology division in Al Mouassat Hospital between august 2008 and 2010 .

All patients fulfilled the 1997 revised American College of Rheumatology (ACR) classification criteria for SLE.

Results:The mean age at disease onset was( 26.22 ± 10.3 years) (range 13-64) and mean disease duration (3.09 ± 2.57 years) (range 1-10).

The female:male ratio (F:M) was 14.5:1.

More than 80% of patients were in second and third decades.

The most common disease manifestations were hematological abnormalities(80.64%) and joint involvement (80.64%).

Anaemia was found in (80.64%), but only 12.9% had haemolytic anaemia.

Leucopenia (35.48%).

Lymphopenia (16.12%).Thrombocytopenia (19.35%).

Arthralgia was found in (80.64%), non destructrice synovitis (25,80%).

The prevalence of malar rash was (64.51%), photosensitivity (41.93%), alopecia and hair loss (35.48%) oral ulcers (32.25%), but discoid rash was uncommon (3.22%).

Lupus nephrites was found in (48.38%), proved by kidney biopsy in 11 patients.

Less frequent manifestations included: serositis (22.58%), neuropsychiatric manifestations (convulsion 22,58%.

Psychosis 6.45%), Vasculitis was observed in 6.45% of patients.

Antinuclear antibodies were detected in (30 patients: 96.77%) and anti-ds DNA in(23: 74.19%).

Low C3 and C4 were observed in 32.25% and 9.69%, respectively.

Conclusion: This study suggests that, in our patients, SLE manifests with clinical features similar to SLE patients from different Arab and International countries.

Arab studies showed several differences in the frequency of clinical and serological manifestations among themselves, each differing in such studies may be due to the varying of numbers of patients in each study and varying duration and disease activity at moment of study, rather than reflecting real significant differences
