Abstract EN

Background and objective: Resurfacing of the patella during a primary total knee replacement remains a controversial issue.

The purpose of this study was to compare results of patellar resurfacing and nonresurfacing, and to improve our surgical outcome in future, depending on these results.

Methods: This is a randomized study on 124 cases of total knee replacement between Jan 2003 and Nov 2005 in Al Mouassat university hospital.

In 65 cases, the patellae were resurfaced (Group one).

And in 59 cases, the patellae were non-resurfaced (Group two).

Results: Anterior knee pain, stair-climbing and rising from a chair were evaluated pre and post operation at the end of follow up period (12-36 months average 16 months).

Anterior knee pain was decreased significantly (from 81.5% to 9.2% in group one, and from 79.6% to 11.9% in group two), and also good improvement was found in stair-climbing and rising from a chair.

Our results were compared with many recent studies.

Conclusion: In this study, no significant difference between both groups was found, and the surgical technique is the Goldstone in getting good results, even the patella was resurfaced or not.
