Background: Bacterial vaginosis is the most common vaginal affection which usually affects women of reproductive age.
The relationship between the vaginal and rectal micro biomes has recently become a topic of increased attention in BV research.
Aim of the Work: To study the relation between a short anovaginal distance and increased risk of bacterial vaginosis.
Patients and Method: cross-sectional study from Jan,2015 to Dec 2015.
done for 100 Women attending a outpatient clinic, ob- Gyn.
Department, Sayed Galal University Hospital, complained of a vaginal discharge.
All women were enrolled in the study of anovaginal distance and BV diagnosis.
a small plastic ruler was used to measure the anatomic distance from the posterior fourchette to the anus.
BV diagnosis was done using Amsel criteria .
Results: prevalence of BV, 100 women included, 74 (74%) doesn't have BV, 26 (26%) had BV.
Mean ano-vaginal distance in centimeter was 3.85±0.54 for negative cases and 3.38±1.02 for positive cases.
Pvalue =0.006 there is significant relation between anovaginal distance and BV.
Conclusion: There was a negative relation between a short anovaginal distance and increased risk of bacterial vaginosis.
