At the beginning of the First World War, the United States settled in the Pacific by successive conquests which enabled it to occupy both the Pacific islands such as Hawaii (1898) or Samoa (1900) Southeast Asia like the Philippines (1898).

They also have control over protectorates such as Haiti, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic or Cuba.

They also protect the passage of the Panama Canal in Central America as shown by their interventions in the region.

The Caribbean Sea is transformed into a lake in the United States.

However, outside this area of close influence which essentially affects their interests, the United States intervenes little in the world, as shown by their late intervention in the 1GM.

They are therefore isolationists.

On the other hand, interventions today are planetary as much from the economic as from the military point of view, diplomatic or even cultural.

The expansion mode is soft power as well as hard power.

The United States is therefore a superpower with global leadership despite the competition of newcomers on the economic scene and on the diplomatic and military scene.

Problematic, how did the United States transform and shape the notion of power throughout the twentieth century, alternating between an isolationism tinged with Monroe doctrine and a Wilsonian view of the role of the United States in the world, of "manifest destiny" ?
