Abstract EN
The Heavy HaulElectric and Diesel-Electric Freight Locomotives on the Indian Railways have an Output of 6350 hp and 5500 hp respectively with individual Traction Motor ratings of 850 k W for Electric and 700 k W for Diesel-Electric Locomotives.
These Locomotives are designed to run on Electrified and non-Electrified sections respectively.
Both perishable and non-perishable Consignments are moved by Freight Trains in India and bulk of the Freight moves through Railways.
Hence, if Waiting Time for change of Locomotives while moving from Electrified section to a non-Electrified section and vice versa can be reduced if a Hybrid Locomotive capable of working in either of Sections is designed and used as Future Technology thereby earning more Revenue by reducing the total Turnaround Time for the Locomotives.
In order to reduce travel time and maximise earnings per km for a Locomotive, a hybrid Traction Drive System using Wound Rotor Induction Motors as Traction Motors capable of running on both i-4>,25 kV, AC supplied from Over Head Equipment and 35 kV, AC supplied by Diesel-Engine driven Alternatoris proposed in this Research Paper.
