English Abstract

This study was conducted as a consequence of the dramatic shift of linguists' attitudes and viewpoints towards lexis in general and lexical errors in particular.

This study aimed at investigating lexical errors and their sources.

In order to fulfill the aims of the study, a translation text was prepared and distributed to the subjects which were chosen randomly. The sample of this study consisted of thirty undergraduate Jordanian learners of English at Mu'tah university at the academic year 2015/2016, aged between 21-22 years.

The lexical errors were defined, analyzed by using error analysis method, for the classification of lexical errors, Al-Zughoul's (1991), taxonomy was partially being used.

The findings of the study revealed that the subjects made a large number of lexical errors which fall into two main categories based on their sources; intralingual and interlingual errors, intralingual accounted for 51.8%, whereas interlingual accounted for 48.7%, each of these categories has other subcategories.

The results also revealed that the highest number of errors were "assumed synonymy" at 19.5%, followed by "similar form" at 14.4%, and collocation at 13.8%.

In addition, it was found that a number of factors influenced the subjects' production of lexical errors, such as literal translation, Arabic semantic transfer, lack of adequate L2 vocabulary, false concept hypothesized, and the intrinsic features of L2 vocabulary
