English Abstract

In this thesis, the researcher examines the mechanisms that underlie Subject-Verb agreement in two typologically distinct languages: Standard Arabic and Sorani Kurdish.

The researcher argues that while Chomsky's (2000) standard Downward Agree approach may account for the empirical facts at issue, Bjorkman and Zeijlstra's (2014) Upward Agree fares the syntactic analysis better since it does not imply the postulation of any vacuous unmotivated projections and operations as Chomsky's Agree approach.

Nonetheless, in adherence to Minimalist Program's economy principles, the researcher advocates the parametric nature of the direction of agreement to be the rule not the exception.

In essence, the researcher undermines the assumptions of one universal direction of agreement, be it downward or upward, to account for the attested cross-linguistic variation in this regard for theoretical considerations pertinent to the core assumptions of the Minimalist Program
