English Abstract

Phytochemicals, total phenolic content, antibacterial and antioxidant properties of methanolic extracts derived from four medicinal plants (Origanum majorana, Curcuma longa, Foeniculum vulgare and Glycyrrhiza glabra) were investigated in this study.

Variations were observed among the examined plant extracts in antibacterial and antioxidant activities as well as in their phenol and phytochemicals content.

The results of antibacterial investigation showed that G.

glabra extract had the highest antibacterial activity against all tested bacterial strains as compared with the extracts of O.

majorana, C.

longa and F.

vulgare.

The extracts of O.

majorana, F.

vulgare and G.

glabra contained almost equal amounts of phenolic compounds (25.4, 25.1, 26.3 mg GA/ g plant extract , respectively).

According to the IC50 values of DPPH assay, the highest free radical scavenging potential was found in The extract of O.

majorana (47.3 μg/mL), followed by G.

glabra, F.

vulgare and C.

longa respectively.

The trend for ferric ions reducing activities of the four plant extracts did not vary markedly from their DPPH free radical scavenging activities
