English Abstract

Helicobacter pyloriinfection is known as one of the most common infection worldwide.

The aim of this study was to investigate the oxidative stress and biomarkers antioxidant enzymes systems in Helicobacter pyloripositive patients and normal.

Sixty four Helicobacter pyloripositive patients with a mean age of 34.8 years, who were diagnosed as Helicobacter pylori infected by immune test, and ten controls(mean age = 33.5 years) were also enrolled in the study.

Tests for complete blood count, serum and plasma lipid peroxide and total antioxidant (DPPH) capacity were performed in each patient in the study and control groups.

Also, the antioxidant enzymes ; superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase ( CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GR) and glutathione transferases were evaluated.

Mean plasma DPPH levels were significantly lower in patients with Helicobacter pylori positive compared to control.

Also, this study showed a significant difference between the leukocytes, neutrophils (p≤ 0.02), lymphocytes(p≤ 0.05), Monocytes (p≤ 0.03), and eosinophils (p≤ 0.01) level of Helicobacter pyloripositive patients and control. Moreover, in the Helicobacter pyloripatients, the activities of superoxide dismutase and Catalase in blood were markedly higher than those of control group (P = 0.03 and P = 0.02, respectively).

Whereas, the activities of glutathione dependent enzymes; peroxidase, reductase and transferases in the Helicobacter pylori patients were significantly decreased compared to those of control group (P = 0.0001, P = 0.03 and P= 0.001 respectively).

Also, the mean values of lipid-peroxide (MDA) was significantly increased in the serum of Helicobacter pyloripatients (P = 0.02) and no significant difference in MDA level and total antioxidant activity in plasma of Helicobacter pyloripatients (P = 0.07 and P = 0.02), respectively.

Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that Helicobacter pyloriinfection has an effect on oxidative stress markers and antioxidant enzymes activity and on levels the immune cells.
