English Abstract

This thesis deals with the process of field-induced electron emission from the surfaces of metals into vacuum, before and after coating by a dielectric material.

This process induced by an intense external electrostatic field and usually called cold field electron emission (CFE) is technically important due to its large number of applications, such as electron sources for microscopes and field emission displays.

The research described in the thesis addresses the effect of an insulating layer (epoxylite resin) on the field emission characteristics of clean carbon fiber.

Several tips, with different apex radii, have been prepared, and then examined in a standard Field ElectronMicroscope (FEM).

Various field electron emission characteristics have been measured under ultra-high vacuum(UHV) conditions, before and after coating by dielectric materials.

The measurements recorded include current-voltage (I V) characteristics presented as Fowler-Nordheim (FN) plots, scanning electron micrographs and spatial current distributions (electron emission images).
