English Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating the problem of the repetitive occurrence of occupational accidents at construction worksites in the Jordanian construction sector.

Four aspects were investigated; number of accidents, companies' general safety policy, companies' onsite safety policy and companies' workers' safety.

A questionnaire consisting of 40 questions exploring the four mentioned above aspects was developed and distributed among 100 respondents from total population of 300 site and safety managers and engineers, 95 questionnaires were answered, and with the use of ( SPSS 20.0 ) the questionnaire was analyzed.

The results of the research showed that a negative linear correlation exists between companies' class and number of accidents (r=-0.387), a positive linear correlation exists between companies' class and companies' general safety policy (r=0.729), a positive linear correlation exists between companies' class and companies' onsite safety policy (r=0.622), a positive linear correlation exists between companies' class and companies' workers' safety policy (r=0.593), meaning the companies' safety performance increases as we move up from class six to class one, this result is explained by stating that companies of higher classes are more committed to applying safety rules and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations than companies of lower classes.

The results also showed a high degree of statistical significance at significance level α set at 0.05; all P-values from the analysis were below 0.05.

Also the results show good internal consistency and reliability with an obtained Cronbach's Alpha of 0.87.

The research recommends to raise the awareness about the importance of applying safety regulations and the use of safety measures onsite specially among companies of lower classes in order to upgrade safety performances and decrease accidents at construction sites.
