English Abstract
This study aimed to assess safety culture in Jordanian construction industry, this aim was achieved by specific objectives of this research which include: 1.
Study and evaluate the current status of safety culture in Jordanian construction industry from the contractor perspective.
2.
Identify the main elements of safety culture in Jordanian construction industry and evaluate their influence in safety performance for Jordanian contracting companies.
3.
Develop a framework to improve safety culture in Jordanian construction industry.
To fulfill these objectives, this research was carried in three fundamental stages: literature review on topics related to safety culture, personal interviews with 10 projects managers having high experience in construction processes to develop the final form of the questionnaire, at last, questionnaire distribution process; 149 questionnaires were distributed to the targeted sample , which include the Jordanian contracting companies with the first, second and third classes , while the retained number of questionnaires was 82 ; the total respond rate equal to 55%.
Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze the data .The most important results of the study can be summarized as the following: 1.
All safety culture elements, which include; safety policy, management commitment, knowledge and training and physical work environment have a positive impact in safety performance for Jordanian contracting companies.
2.
The elements of safety culture have various impacts in safety performance for Jordanian contracting companies, which can be arranged in descending order according to their influence as the following: knowledge and training, physical work environment, management commitment, safety policy.
Based on the research findings, many recommendations were written for the owners, contractors and many stockholders in the construction processes to improve safety culture in Jordanian construction industry, in addition to many suggestions to improve future works.
