English Abstract

This study aimed at investigating the extent of English language teachers in Karak Directorate of Education interest in self-development.

For the purpose of the study, a self-completed questionnaire was developed and consisted of (28) items in its first draft.

To determine the validity of the questionnaire, it was presented to a jury committee qualified and specialized in education, measurement and evaluation, and curricula and methods of instruction.

The committee has added (5) more items deemed appropriate, and modified other items.

Then the questionnaire was piloted on a sample of (20) teachers of English language from outside the sample of the study, to determine the reliability coefficient.

Using Cronbach's Alpha equation, the reliability coefficient was 0.90, which is considered to be acceptable for the purpose of the study.

The questionnaire in its final form, consisted of (33) items, was applied to the total sample consisting of (160) teachers of English language from the schools of Karak Directorate of Education.

To answer the first question of the study, means and standard deviations of the teachers' responses to the items of the questionnaire were calculated.

The teachers' ratings of their interest in self-development were high.

To answer the second question, One-way ANOVA was used to determine if there are any statistical differences at (α ≤ 0.

05) due to the variable of years of experience.

The analysis revealed that there are no statistical differences due to the years of experience, which means that there is no effect of the variable of years of experience in the extent of English language teachers in Karak Directorate of Education regarding interest in self-development.

The study concludes with several recommendations, among them are the following: encouraging and reinforcing teachers since their ratings on selfdevelopment were all high.

Also inserting new educational concepts in teachers' training curricula such as, self-development, for teachers to be able to perform their duties effectively.-
