Abstract EN

Studying seed storage proteins in legumes (Fabaceae) is very important.

Besides its economic value, seed storage proteins play an important role in plant taxonomy because of the stability of their contents.

Medicago species constitute a wide pasture base in the Mediterranean Regional Countries, especially Syria.

Thereby, we were interested in seed storage protein study of five Medicago species from Al Qnaiterah Zone using SDS polyacrylamide- gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) 30%.

Results showed the dominance of vicilins 7S (globulins) bands (about 11 bands).

However, legumins 11S presented about three bands and albumins 2S (only one or two bands).

Furthermore, results showed bands that presented subunit P of a-amylase inhibitor, a defence protein.

Protein Fingerprints were used to study relationships between the studied species of Medicago, which allowed to distinguish four groups: 1-M.rotata, 2-M.sativa, 3-M.arabica, 4-M.hispida and M.polymorpha.

This study confirms the importance of studying seed storage proteins in legumes for the nutritional value of these plants to be improved.
