Abstract EN

This study aimed to find out the beliefs and practices of alternative medicine and folk medicine among women attended hospitals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Women were interviewed in four hospitals in Jeddah, selected from four geographical areas.

The total sample was 802 women aged 20 to 60 years.

The results showed that 71% of women used some kinds of alternative medicine in treatment of their diseases or children's diseases.

There was no significant difference between the education of women and using of alternative medicine.

About 10% of women used hijama and 12% used cautery.

A great majority used the reading of Quran (81.5%) in treatment of some diseases.

The use of Quran was higher among low education (87.5%) compared with middle (77.7%) and high education (81.5%) women.

About 69% of women believed that envy can cause diseases and the percentage was higher among high and middle education (75% for both), than low education (53%) women.
