Abstract EN

The paper discusses two main problems pertaining the conjunctive particles, i.e., conjuncts or cohesive devices: (i) substitution of conjunctive particles at a single structural pattern, and (ii) the multifunction of a single conjunctive particle when a structural (syntactic) change takes place.

The corpus of this study is one of the richest data of Arabic language, i.e.

the Quran's ten modes of reading.

The paper focuses on a specific particle (al-waw – and) which is the focus of this study.

It concludes that this conjunctive particle can substitute the conjunctive particles (fā' - then) and (aw - or).

Also, the conjunctive particle (al-waw – and) is a multifunctional particle which occurs in various structural patterns.

By studying its functions and ways where it substitutes other particles, the paper reveals the richness of the Arabic language through the ten modes of reading.

The paper further emphasizes the indispensability of conjunctive particles in Arabic syntactic structures and how mean ing is affected in the Quranic modes of reading
