Abstract EN

The research focuses on expansion areas in Damascus city during the French occupation (1920-1946) in order to know the stages in which the urbanization came out at those areas and its development temporally and spatially.

The development of the city was studied at the end of the Othmannian period and during the French age, while the areas that expanded and developed during that time were defined, then "Ain Al Kourch" was chosen as a case study.

It is one of Saroja quarters that in the city center.

At this study, we specify its urban characters and provide an analysis of the successive emergence of the buildings and its functions and how much they had developed during the time.

Although " Ain Al Kourch" is situated in the city center, yet it has conserved to a great extent its urban texture, and to a less extent the function of its buildings especially those located at the borders of our case study at the streets of parking places, since most of these estates turned into governmental buildings, banks, hospitals, and religious buildings.

The effect has spread out Damascus and its suburbs, while this new function decreases gradually towards the center of the case study in which the buildings preserve to a great extent its original function of residence.
