Abstract EN

The study aimed at analyzing the content of social studies courses in secondary education and finding out its correlation to the process of cultural and national identity forming for KSA students.

The sample consisted of 6 textbooks of history and Nationalism in the three grades in secondary education in the year 2010-2011 in both semesters.

A content analysis sheet was developed, and validated for use in the study.

Results showed that cultural identity frequencies were higher in history books in the secondary stage; the highest of which were in the Islamic identity dimension in first grade textbooks.

The cognitive dimension, on the other hand, was of the highest frequencies in nationalism courses.

The first of dimensions was citizenship, then the dimensions of values and attitudes in the history book of the second grade.

The history textbook of the third year was of the highest frequencies in the dimension of national identity.

The study recommends that social studies textbooks in intermediate stage be analyzed on the dimensions of national and cultural identity in addition to surveying the perceptions of social studies teachers towards the tendencies of cultural autonomy in general education course in KSA.
