Abstract EN

The aim of this study is to carryout the geotechnical evaluation of soil strata in Tennoma city at Basra governorate/ south of Iraq, classifies and draw a cross section for engineering succession of bearing strata according to N- values of standard penetration test and grain size analysis results.

Two boreholes with 30 meter depth for each are drilled at two sites in the city, 60 samples are taken for laboratory tests.

Results of grain size analysis show that soils in study area can be classified to cohesive soils extend from ground surface to 22m depth represent recent clayey and silty soils and deposits of Hammar Formation, and non-cohesive soils extend from 22m to the end of boring (30m) represent sandy soils of Dibdibba Formation.

The results of standard penetration test and grain size analysis are used to classify soils of study area to nine layers of different bearing capacities depending on their consistency and compactness.

These layers are: Stiff brown lean clay, medium stiff brown lean clay, soft brown and gray clayey silt, medium stiff gray clayey silt, stiff gray silty clay and clayey silt, very Stiff gray silty clay and clayey silt, medium dense gray silty sand, dense gray silty sand, and very dense brown silty sand.

The depth of subsurface water in study area is shallow, varies between 1.9- 2m, which affects the strength of soil and change the capacity of bearing strata.
