The adsorption of chromium (VI) ions from aqueous solution by low-cost sawdust adsorbent was investigated to determine its efficiency to remove chromium (VI) ions.

Batch adsorption experiments were performed as function of solution pH, contact time, initial metal ion concentration and temperature.

The concentration of chromium ion, (Cr6+), in solution was estimated by spectrophotometric method.

The samples were filtered, acidified and treated with 1,5-diphenylcarbazide solution and the concentration of Cr(VI) was calculated from the absorbance reading.

The equilibrium time was found to be of the order of 120 min.

Maximum adsorption of chromium occurred at a concentration of 50 mg/1 and the optimum pH value was 4.0 at temperature of 30°C.

The material was found to exhibits good adsorption capacity (96.4%).

The results were well fitted to both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm models.
