English Abstract

Mankind has been care for most of the reproductive infirmity with herbs and medicinal plants for centuries.

In this study, Juniperus phoenicea fruits acetonic extract were investigated on the reproductive performance in both gender mice.

Juniperus phoenicea is known as a testicular toxicant, but its’ mechanism of action remains uncertain.

To conduct this study, the experimental animals were divided into males and females mice, each group were divided into; 1st control and 2nd treatment (10 mice in each group).

They were treated orally with Junipers acetonic extract at daily dose of 5 mg/kg B.W.[by dissolving (1)g of extract in (100) ml of normal saline], using stomach tube for (38) days (one spermatogenesis cycle) for male and (five estrous cycles) for female.

The effect of Junipers extract on the male reproductive system including: sperm concentration, viability, fraction of rapidly moving sperm and sperm velocity were decreased significantly (P<0.05) as well as increase in abnormal sperm morphology, motility index and Lag time in treated group comparing with the control.

The quantitation of each Sertoli and Leydig cells indices were decreased significantly (P<0.05) with similar result showed in quantitation of spermatogenic cells yield at sequence of cell ratio.

Besides to the decrease of testosterone level, these results are associated with decreased testicular weight and body weight.

The effect of Junipers extract on the virgin female reproductive system was studied.

The estrus cycles assessment showed that the interval cycles were prolonged under Junipers extract treatment as comparing to control and became none cycling.

The estrogen and progesterone hormones levels were decreased, while LH and FSH hormones levels were increased in each stage of the estrus cycle.

The GnRH level was not affected in treated group as compared with control group.

Introduction The plant kingdom has abundant chemical compounds that elicit pronounced effects in animals and humans.

A number of these compounds have become pharmacological tools.

Several countries were demeaned their strategies on the drug development programs involving plants, which in further discouraged a plant serving as a starting material for a drug is unviable in the topical area.

One advantage in developing drug from a plant source, rather than through the complete synthesis of a new drug, is that a plant used as reproductive modulator agent in an endogenous medical system, is likely have along folkloric history and an established low toxicity potential (Norman and Donald, 1982).

Many aromas used by ancient nations for medicinal purpose inducing problems of the reproductive system, which survive today much information on early treatment of many ailments (Tisserand, 1977).

Junipers is one of the most aromas used in folk medicine in different countries (Alakbarov, 2001).

Junipers contained essential oil, which used as diuretic (Heil and Schilcher, 1993), antineoplastic and anti-viral activities (Chandler, 1986).

In veterinary medicine, Junipers extract was used in skin itches (Greive, 1979).

Global searches on anti-fertility agents are going on to tackle the problem of “Population Explosion".

Many hormonal drugs are available for this purpose but they are not free from side effects, hence, the search for a suitable product from indigenous medicinal plants is proposed which could be effectively used in the place of "pill" (McCormack, 1999).

Some notions in literatures revealed that Junipers have an antifertility effect in laboratory rats, (Faweett, 1993) and creating uterine hyperaemia (Holmes,1993) which play as an abortifacient agent (Tisserand and Balacs, 1995).

The aim of this study is to shed the light on the effect of Juniperus phoenicea fruits on testicular function in male reproductive system and on cyclic behavior and hormonal profile of female reproductive system.

To achieve the goal of this study, the following protocol and parameters were done as follows: 1.

Study the effect of Juniperus phoenicea fruits extract on male reproductive system of mice through evaluation of the following:  Sperm function tests and sperm motility analysis.

 Quantitation of spermatogenic cells in seminiferous tubule.

 Quantitation of Leydig cells and Sertoli cells.

 Evaluation of male hormonal concentration.

2.

Study the effect of Juniperus phoenicea fruits extract on the body weight and the testicular weight.

3.

Study the effect of Juniperus phoenicea fruits extract on estrous cycle behavior and hormonal concentration in female mice
