English Abstract

The difficulty of building a secure network is due to the changing nature of the enterprise coupled with the increasing sophistication of the hacker threat, both from inside and outside of the network.

Virtual Private Networks are becoming an increasingly important service to provide the desired security for computer networks.

VPNs enable convenient secure communication among disparate corporate entities and there are many different technologies to choose from.

VPN Firewalls are one of the fastest growing technologies, since firewalls enforce security restrictions and prevent inappropriate access to internal networks.

They work by analyzing each network access request.

Requests are compared to a file of approved source IP addresses and other parameters.

This work presents the development of a VPN firewall called Firewall Based VPN (FBVPN), that provides the users with a secure connection through a computer network.

In FBVPN the firewall is developed based on Dynamic Packet Filtering technique to provide a higher security level than other types.

VPN part in developed FBVPN includes Tunneling Protocol and Rijndael Encryption Algorithm implementation.

Tunneling Protocol is used to build the virtual tunnels between the connected Clients through the network server; this prevents the intruder from attacking the transferring data through the network, Rijndael Encryption Algorithm is used to add additional level of security to the FBVPN.

The developed FBVPN was implemented using Visual C++ Version 6 Programming Language.

It was tested on Local Area Network and its operation gives encouraging results.
