Abstract EN

New grades of free nickel high manganese stainless steel (SSMn4N) and free cobalt Maraging steel have been prepared using a pilot plant induction furnace.

Additionally, four types of standard stainless steels (three austenitic SS304, SS304L, SS316L and one ferritic SS430) were prepared.

Gamma ray mass attenuation coefficients were carried out experimentally for different gamma ray energies emitted from 60Co and 232Th radioactive sources.

The WinXCom computer program (version 3.1) and the Auto Zeff program (version 1.7) were used to calculate the mass attenuation coefficients (?) and the effective atomic numbers (????) respectively in a wide range of γ-photon energies.

The effective electron density (????) and mean free path ? were calculated based on the obtained data.

The obtained results prove that the investigated steel alloys can be applied in harsh nuclear media such as the reactor core.
