Abstract EN
Cadmium (Cd) is a very toxic heavy metal and an important environmental pollutant which is present in the soil, water, air, food and in cigarette smoke.
The present work aims to study the oxidative stress of cadmium on retina and blood of rats and test the protective effect of green tea.
78 Wistar albino rats were classified into five groups.
Group 1 used as a control group, group 2 and group 4 were treated with 20 and 40mg/kg body weight cadmium respectively and rats decapitated after 2,4 and 6 weeks, group 3 and group 5 were treated with cadmium and green tea and also decapitated after 2,4 and 6 weeks respectively.
Group (1) was fed on a standard diet as a control.
The result indicates a decrease in count of RBCs,a decrease in count of WBCs, decrease in total protein of retina, a decrease in TAC level and an increase in MDA level.
Supplementation of rats with GT attenuates oxidative stress caused by cadmium.
In conclusion, Flavonoids have multiple properties that are potentially of benefit for the prevention and treatment of ocular diseases.
