Abstract EN

This study was conducted to examine the effects of gamma irradiation treatment on the chemical composition of raw and irradiated corn gluten (CG) at 8 and 10 kGy, alongside the impacts irradiated CG consumptions on weight reduction and certain blood biochemical factors in growing rats.

Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=60) were fed the experimental diet for 5 weeks.

They were then randomly divided into four groups and fed the isocaloric experimental diets.

Food intake, daily body weight gain, apparent food conversion efficiency, plasma and hepatic lipid variables were assessed.

The results revealed that the chemical composition of irradiated CG showed non-significant differences relative to the raw one.

A dose dependent decrease in crude fiber and increase in total carbohydrates of irradiated CG.

the presence of 412 g/kg raw CG in rat diet reduced the daily food intake, apparent FCE and showed significant weight reduction as compared with those fed control diet or those fed irradiated CG at 8 or 10 kGy.

Meanwhile, irradiated CG at 8 and 10 kGy in the diet of growing albino rats did not affect daily food intake, or weight gain or the apparent food conversion efficiency.

Feeding raw CG or irradiated CG at 8 and 10 kGy for 35 days reduced greatly the elevation of plasma and liver lipid and total cholesterol in rats fed.

These results suggest that gamma irradiation of CG at 8 and 10 kGy did not abolish or revoke the physiological function of CG.

Therefore, irradiated CG up to 10 kGy may be used as feasible natural regimen and therapeutic strategy for the prevention and controlling hyperlipidemia
