Abstract EN

Establishing the first mosque in Islam was the first deed that prophet Muhammad (PBUH) have done after arriving to “Yathreb”.

Back then, the mosque consisted of only five main elements.

Through the history of Islamic architecture, with the evolution of the mosque, many additional elements have been added to the building of the mosque.

In some cases they reached 48 elements, which is almost ten times the number of elements in the first mosque.

As the mosque is the most important building in the Islamic city, these additional elements need to be addressed and determined by some types of criteria to assure that their existence do not interfere with any religious, organizational, economical and architectural disciplines.

This research conducted a field study on the internal elements of the male praying hall in 30 mosques around Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as case studies.

The field study revealed that there are two categories of additional elements: 1) Elements related to engineering disciplines (18 elements) and 2) Elements related to non-engineering disciplines (30 elements).

The study end up with a checklist, which could asses architects and engineers when reviewing mosques’ construction drawings.

Finally, the study concluded with the results, assumptions and recommendations.
